Settlement House (Arlington, Virginia)
www.settlementhouse.us | Facebook

"What an honorable fraternity exists among really fine poems, even if that fraternity consists of a multitude of disparate personalities and voices."
Settlement House Books is an independent book publisher founded in 2007. We take our name from the settlement houses of the late 19th and 20th centuries that provided community through their social and cultural support and services to the urban poor and immigrant populations. We think of ourselves as a home for some of the fine—and frequently disparate—poetic voices deserving of readership but often ignored in publishing today. Our mission is to publish poetry that is a haven for others and a place where all who enter can find clarity and wonder. We also seek to build an audience for the good work of the writers we publish, some of whom you might already know and others whose voices until now have been mostly unheard. "To date we have published collections by Louie Skipper, Sheppard Ranbom, Dennis Sampson, Paul Zimmer, Maria Teresa Ogliastri, and David Alan Evans."

Turtle Light Press
turtlelightpress.com | Facebook | Twitter

Our company, Turtle Light Press, was founded by Rick Black, a former reporter in the Jerusalem bureau of The New York Times, in 2005. By chance, he discovered the art of beautifully crafted, handmade books one day at the Center for Book Arts in New York City. As he browsed informally at the center’s Vandercook proof printers and book presses, he suddenly realized that he could learn how to make handmade books himself, thus combining his love of words and images with a longtime desire to work with his hands.

Books
Nick Virgilio: A Life in Haiku
Nick Virgilio, who started writing in the 1960s and was a pioneer of American haiku poetry, penned some of this country’s most elegiac and memorable haiku. Born and bred in Camden, New Jersey, he was a legend to some, an inspiration to others. He spent countless hours in his cellar at his Remington typewriter, writing haiku about nature, the people of Camden and south Philadelphia, and his family. In particular, he detailed the deep sense of loss that affected him and his family when his youngest brother, Larry, was killed in Vietnam.
Peace and War: A Haiku Collection from Israel by Rick Black
In each of these imagistic poems, peace and war are juxtaposed in ways that portray the heart-wrenching beauty and sorrow of daily life in Israel, a conflict-ridden land. With a unique dos-a-dos (back-to-back) binding, it combines two books into one and fits comfortably in your hand. A moving memento for visitors to and longtime residents of Israel as well as those who have lived through war time.
