Mystery Writers of America, Inc. was established in 1945 by a dozen or so like-minded mystery writers for the purpose of promoting and protecting the interests and welfare of mystery writers and to increase the esteem and literary recognition given to the genre.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Sisters in Crime (SinC), an international organization for people who love mysteries in support of women who write them. The Chesapeake Chapter of SinC was founded in 1990 and encompasses the DC/Baltimore metropolitan regions. Membership is open to everyone.
